Stelvio Pass
46.5300, 10.4540
The highest paved mountain pass in Italy at 2,758 metres, linking South Tyrol with Lombardy in the Ortler Alps. The road, built between 1820 and 1825 under the Austrian Empire, climbs in forty-eight numbered hairpin bends on the northern side and a slightly gentler series on the southern approach. It is routinely closed by snow from November to May. The pass lies within Stelvio National Park. Cyclists know it as one of the most climbed passes in the Giro d'Italia; Fausto Coppi's statue stands near the summit. The name comes from the old Lombardic stilf, meaning steep.
