Malin Head
55.3808, -7.3700
The most northerly point of the Irish mainland, a granite headland on the Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal. The name comes from the Irish Malainn. A small signal station was built here in 1805 during the Napoleonic Wars; its tower still stands. The coast is rich in birdlife, and a few miles offshore the sea floor drops to some of the deepest waters in the surrounding ocean. The weather is famously fierce, with gales on more than a hundred days each year by some Irish meteorological counts. The road ends at Banba's Crown, named for one of the legendary queens of Ireland.
