The Cairn

Kinder Scout

hill · GB · 636 m

53.3847, -1.8739

The highest point in the Peak District at 636 metres. A gritstone plateau on the border of Derbyshire and Cheshire, carved into rough edges and peat groughs by millennia of weather. In 1932 it was the site of a mass trespass that helped establish the right to roam in England. The northwestern face drops sharply to the head of the Kinder Reservoir. Walkers reach it most often from Edale or Hayfield, but no path is easy. The summit is a wide, damp table of moss and bilberry. On a clear day you can see the towers of Manchester. The name may come from the Old English cyn dēore, meaning the royal hill.
