Gotthard Pass

pass · CH · 2106 m

46.5592, 8.5617

A mountain pass at 2,106 metres in the Saint-Gotthard Massif, connecting northern Switzerland with Ticino. The modern road was built between 1820 and 1830 along a route used since the twelfth century. Before the Gotthard Tunnel opened in 1882, this was the only way to move goods between the Swiss plateau and Italy. A hospice founded in the fourteenth century still stands near the summit, rebuilt many times. The pass is open from May to October and closes in winter. It is crossed by the historic Gotthard railway line nearby.
