Brenner Pass
47.0033, 11.5075
The lowest and busiest of the major Alpine passes at 1,372 metres, linking Innsbruck in Austria with Bolzano in Italy through the Wipp Valley. The Romans built a road here in the first century, the Via Claudia Augusta, and the route has been the most important north-south crossing of the Alps ever since. The modern Brenner railway was opened in 1867 as the first high-altitude alpine line without a summit tunnel. Today the motorway carries roughly a quarter of all freight traffic crossing the Alps by road. The surrounding peaks are in the Stubai and Zillertal Alps.
