Ben Nevis
56.7969, -5.0037
At 1,345 metres the highest mountain in the British Isles, rising above Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. Its name is from the Scottish Gaelic Beinn Nibheis, though the origin of the second element is debated: it may mean cloudy or venomous. The first recorded ascent was in 1771 by the botanist James Robertson. The summit is a broad plateau of broken stone with a ruined observatory built in 1883 that served as a meteorological station for twenty years. The mountain is popular with walkers and climbers, but the summit can be treacherous in poor visibility.
